AFTER A LOT OF LAPS AND MILES ON THE ROAD THE GYPSUM RACE TEAM HEADS HOME TO GET READY FOR WEEKLY RACING; PAT WARD WINS UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY

Posted Jul 22, 2010 by David

PHOENIX, NY July 21, 2010 (By Dave Medler) – The Modified Super DIRTcar Series saw five races in six days fill up the last week for the Gypsum Race Team, with tracks as close as Brewerton and Cayuga County Fair Speedway all the way up to the province of Quebec, with stops at Granby and Drummond speedway’s.

The action started last Thursday at the Brewerton Speedway for a short 50 lap sprint at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon”. Pat Ward (Gypsum Express No.42p) Billy Decker (Gypsum Wholesalers No. 91) Ryan Phelps (Big Red Towing No.99) and Larry Wight (Gypsum Express No. 99L) all pulled down top-ten finishes of third, sixth, seventh and eighth.

Pat Ward not a series regular, but a tough competitor every week at Brewerton Speedway, talked about his third place finish, “The car was good but these two guys here are the hottest on the circuit, so if you finish right behind then you’re getting closer and closer."

“We haven’t been very consistent this year, we’re trying though and hopefully we’ll continue to make progress. Third is a good start to the weekend, maybe we can tweak things a little more. Get a little bit better instead of a little worse, then hopefully race for a win against them tomorrow and Saturday,” At Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
Friday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway it was another short 50 lap sprint Super DIRTcar Series race unlike the usual 100 lap features that are common on the tour.

On slick track conditions that made passing tough Billy Decker had the best finish bringing home a 5th place run. Pat Ward (8th) Ryan Phelps (12th) and Larry Wight (17th) rounded out the other finishing spots for Gypsum Racing.

Earlier in the night they had a 15 lap exempt dash for Saturday night that put the top two directly into the draw. Decker totally dominated the race with Ryan Phelps chasing Decker across the line.

Dry and hot temperatures greeted the race teams Saturday as over 100 cars in three divisions made the Weedsport oval a skating rink and even rubbered down the bottom by feature time, making passing at a premium for the final 50 lap segment.

After 50 tough laps Ward and Decker finished fourth and fifth. Wight got a top-ten finishing ninth with Phelps showing sixteenth at the finish.

Sunday night at Utica-Rome Speedway Pat Ward finally got the monkey off his back at the Vernon, NY track picking up his first win of the year there. Ward got by Stewart Friesen on lap 19 and then held off challenges from Friesen to pick up the popular victory. Looking at the point standings, Ward is in 4th only 46 behind leader Bobby Varin with 10 events left.

Monday and Tuesday the team hauled up to Quebec for races at Autodrome Granby and Autodrome Drummond on the Modified Super DIRTcar Series.

It was a tough night at Granby as Decker and Phelps had tough nights with motor problems for Decker and rear-end trouble for Phelps. Wight had a top-ten run finishing 9th in a 100 lap feature that saw a lot of cautions and wrecked race cars.

At Drummond, Decker rebounded from engine problems the night before with a 6th place finish after 100 laps. Phelps finished 14th and Wight twenty-fourth. Looking at starting and finishing positions it looked like passing was tough as most of the cars finished in the genral area where they started.

The series will head back to Canada this Monday July 26th as they go to the Merrittville Speedway for the Bob St. Amand Sr. 100. In the series point standings Decker is tied for 2nd with Jimmy Phelps as the trail Matt Sheppard by 59 points in a battle that will go down to the final event at the Dirt Track At Charlotte (NC) in November.

This Friday July 23rd and Saturday July 24th Decker, Phelps, Ward and Wight will be in action at Brewerton and Fulton Speedway’s. Ward will be looking for two in a row Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway.
