GYPSUM RACE TEAM DRIVERS LOOK BACK AT FIRST HALF OF THE 2010 SEASON; LOOK AHEAD TO THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON

Posted Jul 15, 2010 by David

PHOENIX, NY July 12, 2010 (By Dave Medler) – Just to change things up a little bit over the next couple weeks we are going to get the Gypsum Race Team drivers’ impressions of the first half of the 2010 season and what they expect over the remainder of the year.

Ryan Phelps (Big Red Towing No.99) what grade he would give himself for the first half of the season? “I’d give myself a big fat ‘D,’” said the high school teacher. “We just haven’t had a good start to the year considering we had a pretty good year last year and ended on a pretty good note. I think we have been working pretty hard and trying a lot of stuff. Just here in the last few weeks things have started to turn around for us, it’s been showing in the results. I think we’re getting back into that ‘B’ range. Hopefully we can carry that right through the end of the year.”

“There are no trade secrets, you start running like Jimmy (Phelps) and Matt (Sheppard) maybe you can start talking about that,” Ryan laughed when talking about recent improvements. “We have been changing everything, real wholesale changes, everything from shocks, to chassis changes. Even engines in different cars, tire changes and it seems to be paying off. We have two cars and they both seem to be running good now. We know where we’re at, we’re not just hovering, it’s getting better every week. We have a good stretch of races coming up and with the changes we have made we should be right in the mix.”

Going into this weekend’s 2nd annual All-Star race at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Phelps is the defending champion, winning both nights’ Modified Super DIRTcar Series Races.

Billy Decker (Gypsum Wholesalers No.91) “I would give myself a ‘B –‘everybody is working really hard, for some reason we just don’t seem to have a handle on everything we want to have a handle on. We’re underachieving; it’s certainly not from a lack of effort. We haven’t landed on something that’s going to make us click and finish the job for us.”

In the last couple weeks things seem to be clicking and it’s showing with a win last Saturday at the Fulton Speedway, plus the points lead in the Modified Super DIRTcar Series that is now 41 points over Matt Sheppard.

“It’s been hard work, Scott, Donnie and all the guys. The Series, I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth talking about that, it seems to be our strong point right now. We’re not going to stop swinging till we know what it takes to get us back to where we have been in the past.”

Larry Wight (Gypsum Express No.99L) “I don’t want to give myself a grade,” Wight laughed as he thought about it. “At the beginning the season we we’re getting a lot of top-ten’s, then we started falling off the pace towards the end,” of the first half of the season.

“We think our results had a lot to do with running the Modified and the Crate Late Model. Two classes a night is too much for me right now. Not many drivers can do that themselves. That Late Model has a lot more forward drive. In the Late Model you can mash the throttle right to the floor, then get back in the Modified and you have to back pedal it. It’s a hard transition running 20 laps in one, then 35 in the other.” For now Wight will concentrate on just one class a night, the Modified.

When it comes to the second half of the season what is Wight and his team looking for? “We have to get our cars running better, that’s a must. We have been doing a little bit better lately, all and all we’re getting better. I really think getting back to basics and concentrating on one car is going to make a huge difference for me and my crew.”

Next week we will get Pat Ward’s and Roy Bresnahan’s impression on their seasons to date, and what they are looking for in the remainder of the 2010 season.

Brewerton Speedway starts All-Star Weekend tonight July, 15th with the Longhorn Trucking 50 lap Modified Super DIRTcar Series. Also on the race card will be the NAPA Late Models and Four-Cylinder Super Stocks. All gates will unlock at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps are slated to begin at 6:30 followed immediately by Bilstein Shocks Time Trials for the Big-Block Modifieds, with heat races ready to take the first green flag at 7:30.
