BILLY DECKER RIDES THE CUSHION SATURDAY NIGHT FOR HIS FIRST FULTON SPEEDWAY WIN OF THE SEASON

Posted Jul 11, 2010 by David

FULTON, NY July 10, 2010 (By Dave Medler) - On a perfect weather night for racing, Billy Decker behind the wheel of the Gypsum Wholesalers No.91 pulled off an exciting three-wide pass for the lead on lap 24 getting around Dale Planck and Mike Mahaney. Once in the lead it was far from over for Decker as he had to hold off a late charge from Matt Sheppard and Michael Storms for his first DIRTcar Big Block Modified win of the year at the Fulton Speedway Saturday night

Mike Mahaney and Johnny Hill led the field down to the green for the 35 lap DIRTcar Modified feature, with Mahaney grabbing the early advantage.

With 5 laps showing on the SUNY Canton scoring tower, Mahaney built up a full straightaway lead as Chris Hile ran alone in second. Behind the top-two, Chad Phelps, Mike Bowman and Dale Planck ran tight for third through fifth.

On lap 10 Mahaney still led but now Hile and Planck started cutting into Mahaney’s advantage. Planck, Michael Storms and Billy Decker kept the top-three in sight.

The first caution flew on lap 19 erasing the lead Mahaney enjoyed from the drop of the green.

Planck, after working on Mahaney for a few laps finally made the pass for the lead on the 23rd go round using the bottom of the speedway. Mahaney fought back pulling even with Planck as the pair went through turns three and four. While the fight for the lead was going on, Decker running the cushion blasted by both Planck and Mahaney as they exited turn four three-wide on lap twenty-four.

While Decker was out front, Storms and Matt Sheppard were coming to the front to make it a three-way battle for the win. With Sheppard and Storms racing for hard for 2nd, it gave Decker enough to get away for the narrow win. Matt Sheppard, Michael Storms, Dale Planck and Jimmy Phelps rounded out the top-five.

“The Gypsum Wholesalers car was better, got a good starting position, made a couple lucky moves and got away with a couple,” Decker said about a season that hasn’t been up his expectations so far. The top of the race track was really good for us, the car free. We were able to rotate up there and not scrub off much speed and got away with one.”

Decker about his race towards the end when Matt Sheppard and Michael Storms were coming, “At that point we were pretty much stuck up there (The top)I just didn’t want to miss anything on the top. If you roll over on these guys just a little bit they are going to take advantage of you. It’s been a long time coming, everybody been working really hard, it really makes you appreciate it, I’ll tell you that.”
